  AN/ARC-73

is an air band transceiver, built by Collins Radio Co.
The radio set consists of:

  • R-1123A (51X2B) receiver,
  • T-879 (17L-7A) transmitter,
  • C-4074 (614U) control unit and
  • MT-2699 mounting.

Both transmitter and receiver use tubes and transistors.
The control unit has a mechanical frequency display, receiver and transmitter are remote- controlled by a 7- wire cable; the crystals in the oscillator circuit are switched mechanically.

The radio set comes from an out of order Noratlas. It was mounted to a board covered by aluminium (to simulate the hull of the plane). Between 1973 and 1979 it was used in a DO-27 of the BW flying sports group to communicate with civilian air fields. (The Do-27 had no equipment for these frequencies).
By using the aluminium plated board, the original Collins fin antenna could be used: the duoband- antenna 37R-2U.
The antenna elements are printed circuits, the plastic housing of the antenna is filled with plastic foam.

    Frequency range:
    Transmitter 116 ... 149.95 MHz
    Receiver 108 ... 151.95 MHz
